Dr. Derek Chase, B.Sc., D.M.D.

Dr. Derek Chase was born and raised in Nanaimo. After graduating from Wellington Secondary School, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in General Biology from the University of British Columbia in 1997. He continued on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from U.B.C. in 2003.

After completing his training, Dr. Chase had the opportunity to return to Nanaimo to purchase the same dental practice where he had been a patient since the age of five. He is a proud Nanaimoite that embraced the opportunity to carry on a tradition of excellence already established at the Departure Bay Dental Clinic. He prides himself on patient communication and will take all the time necessary to fully explain procedures and options to help his patients understand and be in more control of their oral health. Dr. Chase is a highly respected and popular dentist that is known for his straightforward, gentle, and honest approach to patient care.

Dr. Chase is committed to continuing his dental education. He is a member of both the Island Pursuit of Dental Excellence Study Club and the Nanaimo and District Dental Society. His professional affiliations include the Canadian Dental Association, the British Columbia Dental Association and the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

Dr. Rebecca Butchart, B.Sc., D.M.D.

Since 2003, Dr. Butchart has been an accomplished and dedicated dentist who has served both the Nanaimo and Parksville areas. Originally from Vancouver, she attended the University of British Columbia where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology and Genetics in 1998 followed by a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2003. Dr. Butchart spent most of the first six years of her dental career at the busy Wembley Dental Clinic in Parksville, where she gained invaluable experience working with and learning from several other dental professionals. She was then able to bring her skills and knowledge to the Departure Bay Dental Clinic to accompany those offered by Dr. Chase.

Dr. Butchart actively pursues continuing education in dentistry. By attending courses offered through the Upper Island District Dental Society, the Victoria and District Dental Society, the annual Pacific Dental Conference, and the E4D University in Texas, she is continually improving her expertise and knowledge. She is also a member of the Nanaimo and District Dental Society, the Canadian Dental Association, the British Columbia Dental Association and the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. Dr. Butchart also dedicates time volunteering at the Vancouver Island University with the dental hygiene students as a clinical instructor.

Her treatment philosophy is to be honest and direct with her patients and to use the latest techniques while providing gentle, respectful and comfortable care. Dr. Butchart is known for her friendly demeanour and encourages open communication throughout the course of treatment to make the dental experience as rewarding as possible for her patients.

Outside the Office

Drs. Chase and Butchart met at the University of British Columbia and were married shortly after completing their dental training. Together they own and operate the Departure Bay Dental Clinic. Each day they are amazed by the beautiful, relaxing ocean views seen from every operatory room, and are eager to share it with all their patients, both new and established.

Drs. Chase and Butchart have two wonderful children. As a family, they believe in following an active, healthy lifestyle. You will likely find them at the hockey rink or soccer field either playing, cheering from the side, or coaching. They also enjoy boating, camping, golfing, and snowboarding. They are strong supporters and sponsors of sports in the community.

Meet Our Staff

  • Laura – Registered Dental Hygienist

    Laura was born in Fort Qu-Appelle, Saskatchewan, and grew up in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. She moved back to Saskatchewan for post-secondary schooling at S.I.A.S.T., first taking the certified dental assisting program and then the registered dental hygienist program a few years later. Laura moved to Nanaimo in 1994 and has been at the Departure Bay Dental Clinic ever since. She prides herself on a gentle touch and friendly demeanour. Her goal is to help her patients attain and/or maintain good oral health for a lifetime. Laura is married with two children and a Chocolate Lab. She enjoys camping, cooking, and spending time (mostly laughing) with her twin sister.

  • Hien – Registered Dental Hygienist

    Hien graduated from the dental hygiene program at Vancouver Island University and has been with the Departure Bay Dental Clinic since 2009. Her primary goal is the prevention of gum disease and helping patients understand the importance of a healthy mouth. With her gentle instrumentation technique, she strives to make each patient’s cleaning experience relaxing and pleasant. Hien has a daughter named Ivy. In her spare time, she enjoys watching a good movie, spending time with her family and travelling.
